The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
