Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
